Cancun, Mexico, isn’t just a tropical haven for sun-seekers; it’s also a prime destination for avid fishermen looking to reel in the big ones. Often referred to as an angler’s paradise, the turquoise waters of the Caribbean host some of the biggest and fastest sport fishing species year-round.
Whether you’re an experienced angler looking for a challenging big-game fishing experience or a novice wanting a more relaxed day of fishing, there are many options when it comes to deep sea fishing in Cancun. Use this free guide to learn what to expect and how to best prepare for the adventure of a lifetime.
Step 1 – Planning A Great Trip
Choose The Right Deep Sea Fishing Charter
Not all deep sea fishing charters are created equal. Research and select a reputable charter service that aligns with your preferences and needs. Look for experienced captains, well-maintained boats, and positive customer reviews. Our charter, for instance, boasts seasoned guides, top-notch equipment, and a commitment to making your fishing experience unforgettable.
Pick The Right Time and Season
Cancun offers fantastic deep sea fishing opportunities year-round, but the type of fish you’ll encounter can vary with the seasons. Consider your target species and the best time to catch them. Whether it’s the thrill of Marlin in summer or the abundance of Sailfish in winter, planning your trip during the optimal season enhances your chances of landing the catch of a lifetime. Use our Cancun Fishing Calendar to get started.
Tailor Your Fishing Experience
Make your deep sea fishing adventure uniquely yours by customizing the experience. Inform your charter about your skill level, preferences, and any specific species you’re eager to catch. Our team is dedicated to personalizing each trip, ensuring you get the most out of your time on the water.
Step 2 – Preparing For Your Trip
Pack The Essentials
The weather conditions (and your comfort levels) will play a role in the clothing you choose. The following items are essential for your trip:
- Shoes with a rubber sole: These will help keep you on the boat. Be sure to avoid light-sole or non-marking shoes. You don’t want to leave streaks on the boat’s deck!
- Polarized sunglasses: These will protect you against the sun’s harmful UV rays. Some polarized shades will even help you with certain sighting fishing techniques!
- Seasickness medication: Is this your first trip? Bring Dramamine (or similar medication) with you. Even if you’ve been on boats before, the open sea waters may be choppier than what you’re used to.
- Sunscreen: Protect yourself from the sun and avoid an uncomfortable sunburn, especially if you plan to wear light clothing such as a tank top.
- Layer your clothing: Some people do better in the cold than in the heat, and vice versa. It’s a good idea to wear several light layers of clothing. You can shed or add layers if the weather conditions change abruptly.
- Backpacks and Ziplock bags: Bring these to store your belongings on board the boat.
Review Onboard Policies
Fishing and Fun in Cancun will do everything reasonable for you to have a great time on your fishing trip, but we do have some rules. Some are general rules for safety and other rules are for the protection of our boat and equipment. Please read our Terms & Conditions and cancellation policy before you book. Make sure to ask any questions.
Confirm Arrival Times & Location
Will will send various reminders about your deep sea fishing charter after you book to ensure you have all the information you need. However, if you have sudden changes in plans or the number of people in your trip, please update our team ASAP.
On the day of your trip, we will confirm what time the captain and crew want you to arrive at the marina or what time we will arrive at your hotel location for pickup. Keep in mind that you may want to give yourself extra time to get on board, stow your belongings, and meet the crew.
Are You Keeping Or Releasing?
Depending on the species and time of year, you may not be able to keep all or some of the fish you catch. Your crew will also let you know whether the fish you catch is a “keeper” (the legal size and breed to keep) or not. Certain prohibited species of fish must be released.
If you decide to keep your fish, we can clean and store it for you or cook it while you are on board the boat. We can also arrange for your catch to be taken to a local taxidermy for mounting if that is your desire.
Plan Ahead For Tip
Many first-time fishing charter passengers may not be sure about tipping practices. In the recreational fishing charter industry, tips are accepted. A 15-20% tip is customary. Remember that many captains won’t have a credit card processor on board and prefer cash.
Step 3 – What To Expect While On The Boat
Tell Us What You What!
If you are deep sea fishing in Cancun to catch a specific fish or want to use a special technique, let our team know! Our captain has a lifetime of experience on these waters and can take you to locations/areas that will reach your goals.
Getting To Deep Sea Waters
Deep sea fishing takes place in the open ocean. The water is at least 30 meters deep, and this is where big fish live and migrate. It takes extra time to get out into deep water, and this counts as part of your trip. Be prepared for your boat to move at a fast pace out into the ocean. Our crew likes to talk to beginners and expects to answer a variety of questions!
Learn Best Deep Sea Fishing in Cancun Techniques
You’ll get coaching and guidance from the professionals on your ship, so don’t worry about how much you don’t know. The things you learn on your first trip can easily be applied to the next one!
Soak Up The Sun
Deep sea fishing in Cancun isn’t all action. There might be more downtime than you expected. However, this downtime is a good thing! It lets you get to know your fishing buddies, learn more about deep sea fishing, and enjoy the scenic views of the Caribbean waters.
Eat What You Catch
One of the best things about deep sea fishing in Cancun is you get to eat what you catch! Fresh-caught fish may very well be on the menu — but it might not be cooked. You can ask the crew to carve you a piece of sashimi as they prep your catch. It doesn’t get any fresher than that!
Deep Sea Fishing In Cancun FAQs
Do you offer group charters?
All of our deep sea fishing in Cancun charters are private. We do not put groups together. Entirely too much can go wrong offshore. For example, if we put you with another group and they get really sick and have to come back, it ruins your day. Or, if we hook up with a giant Blue Marlin, who decides who gets to fight it? Or, what if the other people are simply annoying? We have found that putting groups together is a rotten idea.
You charter the entire boat for yourself. If you only have one or two people and you’d like us to supply extra crew, let us know. We likely could get and aspiring new mate to come along to help you fight fish.
Does the fishing boat have AC or an indoor space?
Yes, our private fishing charter boat has an indoor space with full size couches, AC, cooking area, and a bathroom.
Can I bring someone who’s never fished before?
Yes! Our team is used to working with a variety of experience levels, even people who have never fished before. One suggestion we have for first-timers is to ensure they take adequate steps to prevent seasickness during the trip.
Are private fishing charters priced per person or per trip?
Our deep sea fishing charters are priced per trip with a max of 8 people.
